When I was 13 years old my father was hit by a truck . There was no witnesses and my mother and I found out that my father was in the hospital because a few people cared . We were brought to the hospital where he was and we came to him in the ICU ( intensive Care unit) . He was in good spirits and it was hard to believe that something just horrible happened to him .

My father had surgery and I don’t remember exactly what happened next , however he was in a coma that lasted 6 months . In those days being in a coma for six months was the limit . My mother and I visited him whenever possible and relied on the kindness of people . After one of his last surgeries 6 months later , doctors and nurses were trying to figure out how to help him because he was still in the ICU and he was not breathing on his own . One of the nurses who we became friends with explained that his condition was not unique but complicated . She told us to imagine that he was swimming and we should imagine that he is under water and trying to go up and catch his breath . In those days I was considering studying medicine although my father mocked me ( My father always would mock me when I talked about a future career I was interested in until I stopped sharing ) . I asked the nurse questions and then while my mother was having a discussion with the nurse , I went into my fathers room by myself and just looked at him. I have no idea how long I stood there just looking at him but then I suddenly had an idea , I asked my father if he could hear me . I asked him to open or blink his right eye for instance if he could hear me . He followed ! Later zI showed my mother the trick and she was over the moon happy ! We started using this trick to communicate with him and my mother tried to explain to the doctors what we were doing but i guess this method was an “ out of the box “ idea because they were baffled but were not willing to try it .We did this for a while and then I was with my mother visiting him in the ICU . I don’t remember what was going through my mind , however I asked my mother if we could suggest the nurses to open his breathing tube for a second without it hurting my father . My mother was at a loss for ideas and was open to any of my suggestions . She reached out to the nurse who was on shift and asked my question and although the nurse was surprised , said nurse agreed because it was only for a second . Right after the breathing tube was removed for a second , we heard my fathers voice ! My after he was awake and he was alert and he was trying to communicate but had no idea how to !Moving forward the doctors took tests and other experiments and told us later that my father was definitely going to recover !

After the ICU my father spend another six months in the hospital and rehab learning to eat and walk again .

After my father returned home he forgot about everything and was after 3 months back to his usual self .

As I mentioned in my earlier blog posts , I would have moments where I knew something would not have the expected outcome my father wanted and I learned to hide my abilities to protect my mother .
